Anime is a style of animation that originated in Japan and was primarily influenced by the manga (Japanese comics) style. As mentioned before the typical style features characters with exaggerated facial expressions, large eyes, big hair and elongated limbs.

The earliest known Japanese animation dates as far back as 1917, but it was in the 1960s that the anime style was developed. It was much later, in the 1980s that this style of animation became known outside of Japan, mostly to do with the work of Osamu Tezuka. Tezuka was originally a medical doctor, although he never practiced medicine, and went on to become a very well-known Japanese manga artist, animator and producer. Some of his best known works include Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. He is often called the Japanese equivalent of Walt Disney. In fact, the computer-animated 3D Astro Boy movie was released in the US in 2009. It was vaguely based on the long-running Japanese series and it featured the voices of Freddie Highmore (as Astro Boy), Kristen Bell, Nathan Lane, Eugene Levy, Donald Sutherland and Nicolas Cage amongst others.

Like manga, anime is hugely popular in Japan and has started to become popular throughout the world. One of the most popular anime movies to be shown in the US was the 2002 movie, Spirited Away. This amazing movie won an Oscar for the best animated movie, the first anime movie to win such an award. It became the highest-grossing film in Japanese history when it was released their in 2001, overtaking Titanic.

To show how popular anime has become in the Western world, there is the annual New York Anime Festival. It is held at the Jacob K Javits Center in Manhattan and features extensive and some exclusive anime screenings. There are guest speakers, video games, live-action Japanese cinema, fashion, food and culture. If you are a fan of anime this event may be worth a visit if you haven’t already done so.
